Valentine’s Day Messages In Sinhala (By Someone Who Doesn’t Know A Thing About Being Romantic)

lazy but smart sinhala valentines day

I’ve never been much of a “romantic”…

(The fact that I actually thought a picture of me with a plastic rose in my mouth and a fake backdrop of a fireplace would look “sexy” should prove my point)

At the same time, I’ve never been one to celebrate Valentine’s Day either. I always found it rather gimmicky…

… All the over-priced roses, chocolates, teddy-bears and hundreds of radio commercials that start with “Want to surprise your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day?” kind of got me fed up with the whole damn thing.

So then what the hell am I doing writing a Valentine’s Day post?…

Here’s what I’ve decided…

I’m going to do a post that has the usual lovey-dovey lines you can use on your Sinhala Valentine, as well as some of the more unusual lines which I personally think are still romantic.

I’ve also included a bonus at the end for my Lazy But Smart Tribesters who can’t stand Valentine’s Day.

Ready?

Here… we… go…

Creepy guy at the bowling alley on Vday insisted I was a 10 when I kept asking for a size 9 shoe… took me forever! To realize he was trying to compliment/hit on me.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 05:58 #

Haha, yeah, that’s one “sure” way to win someone over… Tell them they have big feet, haha! Hilarious. Thanks Clarissa :)

      • Dilshan Jayasinha March 1, 2015 at 20:47 #

Wait a minute, I just got what he meant!!! That’s actually not that bad of a subtle compliment, no? :)

  2. Tracey February 14, 2015 at 03:14 #

I sell lingerie and one lady said to me that she would be thinking of me when she wore her lingerie for her husband.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 05:59 #

Oh wowww! I don’t think there was anything subtle about that! EXTREMELY direct! Thanks Tracey :)

  3. NJ February 14, 2015 at 03:17 #

  4. Aruni February 14, 2015 at 07:07 #

I told my Thaaththi that I loved him more than George Clooney and he cracked up laughing. It was hilarious.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 07:20 #

Haaaaa! That actually cracked me up too. That’s lovely. Thanks for sharing Aruni!

  7. ali February 14, 2015 at 15:01 #

lol these seem more hilarious than romantic. None the less i’ll give it a try :D

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 16:08 #

Yes, proceed with caution. My team of lawyers have assured me that I cannot be held responsible for the consequences :). Take care buddy, speak again soon.

      • ali February 14, 2015 at 16:59 #

Not to worry. I’m pretty sure the only consequences i will face is my partner uncontrollable laughter at my attempt.

  8. Orpha February 14, 2015 at 15:51 #

    Hello Dilshan,

    J’adooooore ton site !
    Orpha

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 16:09 #

Merck Orpha! Your comments always make me smile (and blush). This one in particular also made me laugh with your sinhala lines. They are perfect :). Take care and thanks again for a lovely comment.

  9. Erica February 14, 2015 at 16:40 #

    Thanks Dilshan,
I got a nice response to my (your!) message :-) and the promise of a Skype call in a few minutes . . . ooh I hope he doesn’t test me cos I only copied the phrase and haven’t memorised it! ;D Hope you’re having a good V Day ;)

Good to have you back and I’m so looking forward to learning bit more Sinhala :)
    Erica.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 17:00 #

Awesome, happy to hear that! Don’t worry, tell your friend that you have this rare condition that allows you to learn any language for short bursts. It’ll give that person something to google after your Skype call :)

      Speak soon, take care Erica.

  10. Elisabeth February 14, 2015 at 21:05 #

    Hey Dilshan,

I have been traveling as well, Europe and US. Started to miss your blog, and voilà, I arrive home and first email is from Dilshan. I’m not into commercialized festivities either, so I enjoyed the cheeky aspect of it. Luckily I do not suffer from Valentine’s anxiety, and neither does my friend, who is a geek. Last year, just to prove it, he sent me a heart built from a mathematical formula. Could have revenged myself and sent one of your ‘schmaltzy’ sinhala formula offerings this year. Couldn’t get myself to do it though, heh heh.

All the best Dilshan, looking forward to hearing more from you,

    Take care,
    Elisabeth

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 14, 2015 at 22:05 #

First email huh? I am honored :)

Heart shaped mathematical formula? Now that I’d love to see.

Hope you had a great trip Elisabeth. Thanks for your comment. Always makes me happy :)

  11. Shirley V February 15, 2015 at 00:39 #

Still laughing awesome, can’t wait to try them out!!! Superb job as always Dilshan. I believe in love for all, but I so agree Valentines has been so ‘marketed’ to fill the coiffures of the floral, jewelry, card, and chocolate industry. Does anyone even know the truth behind what happened to poor St Valentine anymore? I often wonder. In any case you should be sending your love to all, daily not just one day a year.
Wonderful to see you back, hope you had some fun trips. We have all I missed you I think. I was beginning to think you had deserted us. (Postcards sweety, postcards… where are they!!!!)

    væ∙lȧn∙tayin pæth∙thȧ∙kin dhaan∙nȧ, ma∙mȧ o∙yaa∙tȧ hæ∙mȧ∙dhaa∙mȧ aa∙dhȧ∙réyi. for everyone.

;) Yup, copy & paste works like a charm, love it.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 15, 2015 at 03:41 #

Thanks Shirley, very kind of you to say. I also missed everyone and i’m glad to be back. Ok, will remember the post cards next time :)

Thanks and talk to you again soon. Please let me know the reactions you get when you use these lines, haha.

  12. Elizabeth February 15, 2015 at 17:35 #

    Hello Dilshan

Here you are after a long time. I really thought you have what ??? I don’t know for sure.

Anyway, since I am a catholic I like to wish you a Happy St Valentine’s Day.

I remember Sri Lanka too do fuss about this special day.

    Talk to you later.

    Elizabeth T.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 16, 2015 at 06:46 #

Hello Elizabeth, Happy St. Valentine’s Day to you too!! Thanks for your comment. Always a pleasure.

      • Elizabeth February 14, 2016 at 19:49 #

        Hello Dilshan

To answer your question today, Feb 14th St Valentine’s Day is an ancient Roman celebration, & has been observed around the world for over thousand years. This is as far as I know. Love is also not only for people who are young & newly married & lovers. Love could also be shown & given to animals.
I love animals & that is MY VALENTINE’s LOVE – FOR ANIMALS.
Tomorrow is Family Day. Do Sri Lankan’s observe this day? I don’t remember, sorry.

        Bye for now.
        Elizabeth T.

        • Dilshan Jayasinha February 15, 2016 at 10:09 #

That’s a fascinating and different way to look at Valentine’s. I like that. About Family Day, I heard it for the first time just now from you. I don’t really know if this is celebrated in Sri Lanka. Maybe it is but I’ve never been exposed to it.

          • Elizabeth February 15, 2016 at 21:36 #

            Hello Dilshan

Family Day is a provincial holiday in Alberta. That is as far as I know.

So if that’s the case, it is what it is.

            Talk to you later.
            Bye
            Elizabeth T.

  13. Indika February 16, 2015 at 09:12 #

    hahahah – some winners here!

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 16, 2015 at 09:24 #

Thanks buddy! I know it’s frowned upon to laugh at your own jokes but being totally honest with you, I particularly chuckled a lot for the “buying a small house” quip… Scary situation when you crack up laughing for your own nonsense :)

  14. Diana February 16, 2015 at 12:44 #

hello Dilshan…nice too meet you. I am glad can meet you and learn Sinhalase with you.

really this is nice post. I like this post and I want to practice this word to my Sri Lanka Friend. I hope he like what I say after long time no see with him :)

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 16, 2015 at 13:08 #

You’re welcome, Diana. Glad you liked the post. Yes, good luck with using the lines on your friend. Let me know how it goes :)

  15. Sumaiya February 18, 2015 at 07:21 #

    Heyy Dilshan! Great post :D
It’s like a tongue twister for me though..my tongue gets tied up when I try to say those sentences fast :(

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 18, 2015 at 07:32 #

Thanks Sumaiya, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, true, most of these are not that easy to say, which is why in the audio files I repeated each line. But then again, if the person you’re going to say it to is worth it, then you’ll somehow learn it, right? ;-)

  16. Ranisha February 21, 2015 at 00:08 #

VDay is over and i was not able to spend it with my love, but I think I can still use this words to swoon her heheh Thanks Dilshan!

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 21, 2015 at 03:51 #

Sorry to hear that buddy but yeah, most of these should (hopefully) have the desired effect throughout the year and not just on Vday :). All the best, let me know how it works out, alright?

  17. Ismail March 5, 2015 at 05:50 #

Hello Dilshan, I study Sinhalese in this blog and your videos.
I’m half Japanese and half Sri Lankan. I have to visit Sri Lanka and see my mother’s family in this summer, so I started to learn. Of course I know that I can communicate with Sri Lankan in English, but I want to communicate with them in a local language….
I will keep on studying Sinhalese. Though I’m not romantic enough to say such saying in this article haha.

    • Dilshan Jayasinha March 5, 2015 at 11:44 #

Hi Ismail, thanks for your comment buddy. I hope you have a great trip meeting your family. Please tell me later how they reacted when you spoke some Sinhala phrases, ok :)

      Take care.

  18. Uma Balu February 14, 2016 at 10:41 #

Valentine’s day is always so special for me, Dilshan.

That;s when I keep waiting for a very short, yet romantic call from my dear one.. hearts filled to the brim with love, forgetting those routine lifestyles and work, making the most of those precious minutes, recalling past memories with fondness..worth a whole year’s wait..

This time I would love to say:
    “o∙yaa hin∙dha ma∙tȧ hæ∙mȧ∙dhaa∙mȧ væ∙lȧn∙tayin dha∙vȧ∙sȧ va∙gḗ”

    • Dilshan Jayasinha February 15, 2016 at 10:04 #

Sounds like a true fan of the day, thanks for sharing Uma. I hope you had a good one yesterday.

Have to say I’m with you. Roses, card – no kiss, not even a hug. Last one I’m doing…

  22. Damayanthi August 7, 2017 at 15:13 #

    Thank you so much!
Got a question how do you reply in sinhala if someone says I love you. Translation off ‘I love you too.’

    • Dilshan Jayasinha August 26, 2017 at 19:21 #

      You’d say “ma∙math o∙yaa∙tȧ aa∙dhȧ∙réyi” (and then you watch that person blush…)
